Our Mission
SISTER is a place for female DJs to get gigs without bias, providing
a supportive, friendly platform for any female DJ, MC or live performer
to enjoy their music where gender is not an issue... a place where
women are neither fighting to be heard nor imported merely to fulfill
a gimmick quotient. We're not raging feminists - we just think it's
better to be viewed as a DJ first, and then as a woman, when you're
behind the decks.
SISTER is not anti-male at all, it is simply pro-female.
Our MO: every month we throw a party at a club or warehouse and
feature a style of music (such as techno, drum and bass or trance)
in each room. Every now and again we throw a benefit party for various
women's causes such as
Breast Cancer Action, RAINN
or the San Francisco
Late Night Coalition.
We have eight residents; seven DJs (Polywog,
XJS, Forest
Green, Queen Agnes B,
Amber, Melyss, Samira
and Seraphim) and a resident MC
- Audio Angel. We also have
a large number of local guests in the rotation, plus out of town
guests - we even have male guests appear for charity events, whose
main task is to dress in drag and show the spirit of SISTER. Our
web site contains the biographies and contact information for hundreds
of female DJs, guests, residents and others worldwide, and we hope
it provides a useful resource not only to the artists, but to promoters
and others interested in booking those DJs.
The criteria by which we select members into the collective are
as follows: They should be talented DJs (or MCs), who represent
a wide range of electronic music genres, and behave professionally
both inside and outside the Sister collective.
While performing under the Sister crew affiliation, no resident
artist is to appear at an event where she is promoted using gender
specific terms (such as "Lady" or "Diva"), where
women are described in derogatory terms, or where obscene, violent,
or degrading depictions of women are used.
And finally, crew members should be devoted to the idea of working
to support female DJs everywhere.
