Next up: an interview with MC Audio Angel of San Francisco
from December 2000.
SISTER SF: How long have you been singing? Performing and
acting?
Audio Angel:
Singing professionally for 2 years. For fun all my life. Acting
and voice overs for 2 and 1/2 years.
SISTER SF: When did you first hear jungle being
played? What was your first impression of it when you did?
Audio Angel:
Well, I consider my first exposure to "jungle" to acutally be hardcore
techno, one of the stand out tracks in my mind was the Genaside
II remix of Prodigy's "Jericho"...it had this insanity to it that
was sooo comforting to me, like nothing could be more insane so
I could just let myself go into that sound. I recall hearing it
out in Florida in '92 and being the only person on the floor looking
at foolios like, "DO YOU HEAR THIS SHIT??!"
After that I got more and more
into stuff like Moonshine's Speed Limit Series. I had my one raving
friend who, when she moved to Chicago told me about all drum-n-bass
parties. I figured that was what they called hardcore in Chicago.
Ha ha ha. My first exposure to what might be called "proper" d-n-b
was Goldie's "Timeless." Fucking blown away.
SISTER SF: What kind of music did you listen
to growing up?
Audio Angel:
So Much! Jazz and Stevie (thanks to Dad), Gospel and a.m. radio
(thanks to Mom), Pop MUSIC 70's and 80's, Punk and New Wave (thanks
to my brothers high school buds), Prince, Art of Noise and Linda
Ronstadt stand out...
SISTER SF: How did you first start becoming
involved in the "underground" electronic culture?
Audio Angel:
Just by clubbing mainly. At 17, sneaking into clubs, strictly to
dance.
SISTER SF: What do you like most about performing?
And why do you do it?
Audio Angel:
The shared experience with the audience and the DJ. It can be so
powerful. I do it because I love it. I adore music. I adore singing.
I adore dancing. I feel honored to share this. Oh yeah and the fat
cash! HAR HAR!
SISTER SF: Was there a special event or moment
when you decided "I want to be a vocalist or was it more of a logical
progression, an evolution?
Audio Angel:
It's a combination of being encouraged to do it at that right time
when I was able to truly believe in myself and a logical progression
from dancer to performer. It's always an expression of my adoration
for music.
SISTER SF:Where do you see the evolution of
drum and bass heading?
Audio Angel:
It's always all over the place. But I do hear a lot more soulfullness
coming through in the US tracks out there and that is exciting.
SISTER SF: How do you feel the S.F. scene differs
from other cities?
Audio Angel:
We've got more Women!!! That makes our vibe a little less aggro
than many I've experienced. We are outrageously knowledgable and
not easily impressed. We are highly talented and loving individuals
who are generally down to work through problems together.
SISTER SF: You're a resident at Eklektic, San
Francisco's main drum and bass weekly. When, how and why did you
start performing at Eklektic?
Audio Angel:
My first Eklektic gig was at Kate O'Briens in January '98 with The
Honey B. I sang on and off with UFO! there and then on in July of
'99 I became a resident when it had already moved to Rico's. I was
asked to sing at the '99 Pride Float, the first ever drum-n-bass
and breaks to represent at Pride (with Ms. E and Felix the Dog)
it was from that performance that dMarie asked to me to join the
Eklektic/Groundscore family.
SISTER SF: What are your professional and artistic
goals?
Audio Angel:
To learn how to produce my own music. To learn piano and/or guitar.
To sing in an indie pop band. Too many to list!!! :D
SISTER SF: Do you have a day job?
Audio Angel:
My career is in voice overs and acting. So actually doing that and
auditioning is my job.
SISTER SF: Do you have any advice for women
thinking about getting in to the industry?
Audio Angel:
Go for it. That's pretty much universal advice though, not just
for the xx crew. But I guess one thing I could say to other women
is support each others' endeavors. We don't all have to love and
hug each other, but definitely respect each other and yourself.
SISTER SF: How do you feel about performing
at SISTER SF events?
Audio Angel:
GUHHHHHHHREAT! Lemme know when ya might need or want me! :D
