DJ Quela
Quela Robinson's love of House music begins with the fact that she
can't sing a note, dreams about flying and enjoyed a childhood completely
free of any religious responsibilities.
<1981> 8 years of young ears for Papa's library: Tuesday heartbreak
and Sunday be-bop, the Quiet Storm and Bustin' Loose, (doin' it)
Rock Creek Park and the last glorious years of black radio in Washington,
D.C. None of which branded her heart until the next visit to Grandma's.
Sitting with Justin on Uncle Timmy's bed as he arranged every last
Luster Curl for the benefit of Big Orange Collar and his Saturday
Night Debut. She heard the crackle of Tim's tape, fresh from his
Chi-town luggage. The loudest voice started in to a mournful cry.
"What is that music?" she asked her uncle. His reply was masked
in the cloud of Halston seeping over his ready-to-wear shoulder
and into her little brother's nose; "Tennn Cittyyyy..." settled
in a fog over her heart and claimed sadness, beauty, piety and glamour
as it's own forever. Somewhere later in her life, she'd learn the
Brazilian term 'saudade'. It sounded just like her brother's sneeze
that afternoon.
Ms. Robinson has recently returned to high plains drifting in Santa
Fe, NM after a few hectic years in San Francisco. She has been involved
in supporting and promoting the independent music scene and its
more overlooked talents for ten years. Two years ago, she took to
the stage herself under the tutelage of her youngest brother, Scott
Edmonds of MechaSoul. Quela spins deep house, downtempo and rare
grooves on a mission to educate audiences through sound and return
House music to its diverse origins.
She's also a writer
and roving ambassador for her sponsor Citizen 7, and can be reached
for booking or intelligent discourse att djquela@hotmail.com
