Born and raised in Overland Park, Kansas (a suburb of Kansas City), Michaela White, known to many as DJ Miss Michaela, fell in love with dance music during the summer of 1995. She could be found hugging the speakers at various clubs and raves in the area. Michaela began collecting house records in 1998 and with the inspiration of some fellow DJ friends, she began to develop her own skills on the turntables.

Miss Michaela was a musical virtuoso from an early age. With encouragement from her mother, she began studies of classical piano and music theory at 7 years old. She moved on to play the violin at age 9, then proceeded to teach herself how to play the viola, cello, bass, clarinet, guitar and drums. “I’ve always enjoyed playing music and I feel that the turntables are just another platform for musical expression. I figured out the equipment rather quickly and taught myself how to beat-match, after lots of practice—things just began to flow.”

While known mostly as a house DJ, Miss Michaela shows no limitation when it comes to playing different styles of music. “I can express my feelings differently through house than I would if I were playing drum & bass or techno. I really play my feelings out through my records. I’ve been known to play through a wide spectrum of house music in my sets, from the really deep, jazzy cuts, to the trackier and harder records; and I completely love spinning old Chicago acid tracks and disco classics. I am heavily influenced by the Chicago house sound but I draw inspiration from everything that I hear.” Her passion for spinning is definitely felt in her flawless, driving mixes.

Playing frequently in Kansas City, she has also been invited to spin at numerous events throughout the mid-west. In addition she has played alongside such talent at Carl Cox, The Orb, Justin Nichols, DJ Monk, Miles Maeda, John Creamer, Robert Armani, Wally Callerio, Lord Vishnu, Kazpa, Mazi, Rick Garcia, CZR, Justin Long, John Simmons, Daryl Cura, Pat Nice, DJ Roland and many others. She’s held several residencies over the last few years at clubs including The Hurricane, The Empire Room, Spark Bar and Pure Lounge.

She’s even taken her turntable talents to a different media: professional children’s theatre. Miss Michaela was chosen to perform the part of the DJ in the Coterie Theatre’s 2002 production of “Black Butterfly, Jaguar Girl, Piñata Woman and Other Superhero Girls Like Me”. The play is a compilation of writings and poetry written by and based on Latina teenagers growing up in East L. A. While working closely with the director and choreographer, Michaela composed the score of the show from many styles of Latin influenced music and then mixed and performed the score live onstage (with the actresses). “This was probably the most unique opportunity that I’ve had yet! Not only was I playing live sound cues during the performance, I was mixing a live set pre-show while the audience were taking their seats for the play. It was a rare chance to expose a broad range of people to the art of DJing and dance music.” From age 2 to 82, Miss Michaela had them bobbing their heads and tapping their feet.

What does the future have in store for this busy young lady? “I’m really making an effort to produce my own music. It just seems like a natural progression for me to develop as an artist. I want to continue playing records and travel more.”
