DJ Freya
DJ
Freya's record case represents two distinct drum and bass styles:
An aggressive darkstep dance floor selection with labels such as
Renegade Hardware, Virus, Technicsal Itch Recordings, and Soundsphere.
As well as a subdued neurofunk collection drawing from Precision
Breakbeat Research, Metro, Certificate 18, Thermal, and others.
Her tracks are both upfront and unique, with tight mixing skills,
an attention to detail, and a distinctive label selection.
Freya's
foundation for her DJ career began with her exposure to early 80's
electronic-infused dance music. Her attention was caught by the
electric bass solos, drum machines, and other early digital equipment.
At age ten she began playing the acoustic and electric bass. At
age fifteen she was exposed to hard-edged European and North American
industrial dance music, where her serious record collection began.
In
1996 she encountered drum and bass for the first time. After listening
to a single CD and going to a small club night, she was hooked.
In late 1997, Freya's visual art career and a love of mountain sports
led her to Colorado. There she met friends who were drum and bass
producers and DJ's. Freya bought her own DJing equipment early the
following year. Six months after her DJing began, she was invited
to New Mexico to spin alongside Reid Speed (Breakbeat Science, NYC).
A rotating residency with DJ's Fury (Champion Sound) and Cannon
at Club SOMA in Boulder, CO followed. (SOMA was voted Best Club
in Colorado by MIXER magazine, 1999.)
Freya
played raves, clubs, radio, and alternative venues in Colorado and
New Mexico. She also had her own two hour weekly internet radio
slot on aminoradio.com. As her passion for drum and bass grew, Freya
knew that she wanted to be a part of a larger stateside community.
"After vacationing in San Francisco to see DJ's Grooverider and
Fabio, and doing research on the web, I knew that The Bay Area had
arguably the most exciting drum and bass scene in the US. With record
labels like Thermal Recordings, Pneuma, and Green Label, and such
talented domestic producers on those labels, I was drawn to the
bay area. Since moving here in September, I have been able to be
more active in the drum and bass scene than ever before."
In
California, Freya has spun at Club Boomerang, The Bassment, The
Backflip's Element, SISTER SF 2 Year Anniversary party, Mission Control
series launch party, Subversions radio/internet show on KSCU in
Santa Clara, and the Metallic Blurp radio/internet show on KZSC
in Santa Cruz. In the fall of 1999 Freya produced a biweekly drum
and bass series, Reverb, in the San Francisco Urban Outfitters.
