the baroness The Baroness

An average day in the life of The Baroness consists of oversleeping by at least half an hour, taking at least 80 phone calls, wondering how to make more money and trying to get ready for gigs. "It is a hard city to make it work in, but goddamn I hope it pays off." Says Charlotte Kaufman, who took her Baroness nom de turntable from the spirit of Theolonious Monks best friend and companion.

A native of Chicago, she moved to San Francisco with a huge record collection in tow. Not really having DJing in mind, she ended up buying a mixer and took over a night at the Crystal Pistol and earned a steady weekend gig. Since then she received major support from the all-female DJ collective Your SISTER SFs House, which opened many doors for upcoming local DJs such as Tracy of Come Unity, Dani of Loveworks and Polywog.

Through hard work and determination she has gained major exposure in the industry and became the DJ for San Franciscos superlative acid jazz innovators, The Broun Fellinis. Eight and a half years later The Baroness is still getting funky at clubs and works the dancefloor nonstop. "I have a need to express something that is inside my head," she says.

As she prowls around the Bay Area clubs at night with her box of records, by day The Baroness helps run Hardkiss's Sunburn label. Recently, she mixed The Royal Treatment, a compilation CD of Zoe Magik's City of Tribes tracks that included two of her remixes. Future projects include a 12" for Zoe Magik with Manny Rosa.
